New Oil Paintings After an 8 year Hiatus
I’m pleased to announce that after 8 years of working only with acrylic paint I have returned to oil painting. I’m starting small with a few pieces that are easy to mange but I’m gearing up for some big exciting new work in the early part of this year.
I’m finding it incredibly refreshing and exciting to dive back into oils but it is also proving to be a challenge. For one thing I have decided that for the most part I will not use solvents like mineral spirits or turpentine. This is the reason that I originally chose to step away from oils, because I didn’t want to subject myself to the detrimental health effects of breathing solvent fumes all day! So this time around I’ll only need using oil to thin the paint.
If you’re an oil painter you understand the challenges that a solvent-free process brings. But I’m thrilled to be creating again with oils and so far the results are super encouraging. The finished look of oils is unique and can’t be replicated with acrylic paints. There is something about them that just feels so rich and satisfying. They have a glow and richness that is unbeatable.
Below are the oil paintings that I’ve made so far. Again, these are warm ups, I’m just getting the dust bunnies out! Stay tuned for more in the coming weeks.
