Drum Making Workshops Now Available
As you may know, I’ve been making traditional frame drums for the last 6 years. It all started when I purchased a drum from Patrick Pinson’s Cedar Mountain Drums in Portland. Later I decided that I wanted to paint it. That lead to the notion of selling painted drums to people who appreciated my art. I knew immediately that the only way that would be possible is if I made the drums myself.
In 2020 I met with Patric at his shop to talk about learning from him and while I was not able to apprentice with him because of Covid I did take a one on one class from him. After that I was buying drum building kits from him which included all the parts needed to build a drum, but I knew I had to take it a step further. I wanted to know how to work with a whole hide and cut out all the parts myself. I eventually learned to do that with some guidance from Patrick, and also through a lot of trial and error over the next few years.
I’m now to the point where I’m very comfortable with the whole process of building a frame drum and I figured it was time to start sharing that process. If you are in Portland you are in luck because I’m opening my schedule to regular drum building workshops where I will teach small classes how to make drums.
I’ve also dreamed of making an all in one drum making video that could capture the whole process… Well, I’m happy to say that I finally set aside the time to make it and I just spent the last week, working all day long to bring you the following instructional video.
Please enjoy, The Art of Making A Frame Drum. Let me know what you think!
Also, for more about my relationship with the drum and painting them, check out my post “The Voice of the Painted Drum”.
Thanks so much. Reach out to me through the contacts page if you’re interested in taking a drum class.
