Fall is a great time to build a drum! I recently taught a class with a couple students and we built elk drums from a very large and thick hide I got from Centralia Fur and Hide in Washington. I’ve never seen a thicker hide! It was a real challenge to work with, actually. The next day I built another 18”. Then, for the first time I made a little 10” drum that would be good for backpacking maybe. I had a fairly large piece of hide left after the 4 drums, and normally I just cut these leftover pieces up for rattles, but this time I decide to make a little drum. I love it and I think I’ll probably paint it in the next couple days.
