A Look at My Newest Rattle Designs
I’ve been working my hide off making many new rattles, including some brand new designs. I started making rattles to use up the extra rawhide leftover from drum making but now they are a thing all their own. I love making rattles and after more than 5 years I’m still developing new ideas and trying new things. It’s surprising the variation in sound you can get from a simple rawhide rattle.
The sound is dependent on many things like the size, shape, thickness of the hide, and the filling. Corn is a general go-to but I also use beans, rice, tiny bits of rawhide, pebbles or a combination of any of these.
I’m also playing with a lot of ways to decorate them with fur, feathers, leather and beads. Below are all the recent rattles I’ve made and I just added them to my store too, if you like what you see.
Also, I’m doing commissions so if you like some of these ideas but have your own thing in mind, please reach out and let me know what you want. I’d love to make a special retake just for you!
Thanks for reading. Let me know if you have any questions, or to commission a custom rattle.
