This is the largest oil painting I ever made. I took me nearly a year to complete. At the time I was living in an apartment in West Seattle with a 180 degree view of the Puget Sound. It was probably this stunning view which partly inspired this work, which merges the Puget Sound with some other region, closer to Hawaii than Washington State. I love doing that, mixing up regions.

Standing on the overlook on the left side there is a single deer, the observer of this scene, calmly looking out on the world. You could say that this is a scene of destruction, but you could also say that it is one of rebirth. This is what nature does, it must recycle it’s resources, move it’s energy around and essentially feed on itself. The forest burns so that new life can enter in and nourish what remains.

This is one of my favorite paintings I’ve made. The original is unframed but I dream of one day having the time, money and resources to create a grand frame for this painting.
