This was a really fun painting to make. It was created as part of a video series poking fun at the creative process called The Crazy Artist. Over the course of three days I recorded the making of this painting from start to finish and posted the results on social media in the form of a trilogy.

The first video was posted to TikTok and within a week it had gone viral and the comments section was blowing up! It was wild. The commenters quickly veered into a argument over what art was and what made art good, and so on. Because what they were seeing was in part a spoof of an artist creating, and because at the end of that first video the painting had only three hours of work into it, it wasn’t yet a good painting in my opinion. It was hard and fast in the UGLY phase. And so it was fun to see people love it or hate it at this stage.

And so it was witnessing this uproar of opinion over the nature of art and what made a painting good or bad that sparked the title for the piece “Eye of the Beholder”.

Aslo, I found it interesting that out of thousands of comments, few people seemed to recognize that the video was supposed to be funny.
